Taking a bow after the ‘Everyday Inspirations’ Showcase at
Josephine Butler College, Durham University, June 2023.
‘Everyday Inspirations’ was the theme of my time as Writer-in-Residence 2023 at Josephine Butler College, Durham University. During this year-long residency, I ran a series of creative writing workshops which encouraged participants to take inspiration from their everyday lives. The workshops ran at Josephine Butler College and Waddington Street URC, who work with the College through the Intergenerational Project.
I delivered workshops on such themes as People, Places and Objects for students and members of Waddington Street, with participants’ ages ranging from 18-80. The overwhelming majority of participants were first-time writers, which made the quality of their work and ideas even more astonishing.
Through my workshops, the writers created monologues, prose, flash fiction, poetry and letters. They were also able to hear their work performed by professional actors Angela Rose and Kieran Barker at two showcases, one of which was held at Josephine Butler College, and the other at Waddington Street. This latter showcase also celebrated the publication of a pamphlet of writers’ work, entitled ‘Everyday Inspirations’.
